Thanks to the hard work of several outstanding students and instructors from Dean Technical High School new steel railings were replaced at a number of HHA sites. These hand welded railings make a welcome addition to our properties. Thanks to the instructor and students for partnering with the HHA and for the hard work it is truly appreciated!!

MassNAHRO Past President’s Scholarship awarded to Cesar Cruz

The Holyoke Housing Authority is pleased to announce that Cesar Cruz from Churchill Homes has been awarded the MassNAHRO Past President’s Scholarship to assist in attaining his goals of higher education.  This young man is a true role model to the youth at Holyoke Housing Authority and the community as a whole. Cesar was accepted into the prestigious Upward Bound Program in his freshman year of high school.  During his time with Upward Bound he was designated a Scholar three years in a row, and in the summer of 2014 he became a Senior Leader for the Upward Bound Summer Academy.  In addition to his accomplishments with Upward Bound, during his four years at Holyoke High School, Cesar was also a member of the Holyoke Youth Commission, actively participated in Marching Band and the Crew Team, and was a member of the Student Council.

The Resident Scholarship program, sponsored by Housing Authority Insurance Group, has been providing scholarships to public and housing choice voucher residents since 2003. In that time more than $680,000 has been awarded to over 270 students.

Using STARS Online, we will again be offering 50 Scholarships worth $2,500
each. The process is simple; go online and visit https://HAIGroup.STARSScholarshipsOnline.com/STARS/default.aspx select ‘Sign Up’ to create an account, then answer the questions and review the posted documents. By completely answering the questions, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to be awarded one of the $2,500 scholarships.

Developed by the Holyoke Housing Authority, Oakhill consists of sixty Victorian-style three and four bedroom single family homes. Designed by Fernando Domenech, an award-winning architect, the homes have an attractive street presence with large front porches, private yards and off-street parking. They also feature 2 1/2 baths, master bedroom with private bath and walk-in closet, a full basement.

The Holyoke Housing Authority is working with the owner of this beautiful four- bedroom Oakhill property to find a new owner. This home was built in 2004 under the Authority’s HOPE VI grant and is offered at a below market value price to an income eligible first time homebuyer. Affordability requirements will remain in place at the time of sale.

To be an eligible buyer you must:

  • Be determined to be income eligible, household income at time of acceptance into the program, with recertification at time of closing, cannot exceed 80% of the area median as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD),
  • Be a first-time homebuyer (not having owned a home within the past three years)
  • Certify that the home purchased will be the households principle place of residence,
  • Have completed an approved comprehensive first-time homebuyer educational training course

Lesley Santana - Academic Excellence

Congratulations to Lesley Santana!

Each fall, Holyoke Community College recognizes the academic excellence of students who have achieved a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, or higher, after completing a minimum of 30 semester hours of work at HCC. These students are invited to join the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa and are recognized at Convocation.

Lesley Santana, a HHA Family Self- Sufficiency participant in the Foundations of Health program was honored for achieving a 3.65 GPA and was inducted into the honor society in her first semester at the college. She recently passed the pre-admission for the Nursing Program at HCC and will hear if she is accepted in April. This determined participant is also employed full-time at Holyoke Medical Center as a Medical Assistant.

We are so proud of all of her hard work and wish her continued success at HCC and beyond.
