Thank you for your overwhelming interest in the Holyoke Housing Authority's upcoming First-Time Homebuyer Workshop in March! We are so glad to have the opportunity to support area residents and collaborate with partner agencies on this important initiative. Unfortunately demand is greater than our availability, the space in which this upcoming workshop will be held allows for a maximum of 35 people in order to provide an area which is comfortable and conducive to learning. At this time, we are unable to accept any additional registrations for the workshop. However, if you are still in need of a First-Time Homebuyer Workshop, please visit www.chapa.org to view upcoming alternative workshop dates and locations. The Authority will hold another workshop in the Fall and will post that information when it is available. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to working with more area residents in the future! If you have any general questions, please feel free to contact Justine Sabbs at 539-2220.
The Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund, establishment in July 2012 by the Massachusetts Legislature, sets forth a callenge to communities across the Commonwealth: reduce health care costs by preventing chronic conditions.
The Trust supports community-based partnerships including municipalities, healthcare systems, businesses, regional planning organizations, and schools. These groups work together to provide research-based interventions that will:
- reduce rates of the most prevalent and preventable health conditions;
- increase healthy behaviors;
- increase the adoption of workplace-based wellness or health management programs; and
- address health disparities
In January 2014 the Holyoke Health Center was awarded funding under this program. The Holyoke Housing Authority has been invited to partner with the Holyoke Health Center, the City of Holyoke, and other community organizations to address all of the Prevention and Wellness Trust’s priority health areas: tobacco use, hypertension, pediatric asthma and obesity.
Massachusetts Learning, Employment and Asset Program (MassLEAP)
HAPHousing is introducing a new program called the Massachusetts Learning, Employment and Asset Program (MassLEAP). This program provides eligible tenants of state-aided living in Mass General Law Chapter 200 and 705 public housing developments and eligible participants in Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP) with support services in three areas: employment and career development/planning, financial education and asset development, and post-secondary education. The goal is to provide eligible participants with ways to increase their income, education and a better life for them and their family.
MassLEAP is a collaboration between HAPHousing and four local housing authorities, (Agawam, Chicopee, Holyoke, and Northampton) and Holyoke Community College to provide integrated services to qualifying participants. Mass LEAP program will support each participant to achieve their goals for up to 5 years with the primary goal of helping clients increase their earned income.
Listed below are the eligibility requirements for participation in the program:
- The Head of Household/Tenant must have a child, or be legal guardian of a child, under the age of 18 as a member of the household.
- Have a GED/HiSET or High School diploma
- Employed or have a recent work history (within the last six (6) months) OR currently enrolled OR actively pursuing enrollment in a job training, post-secondary education or certificate program.
- Be a tenant in good standing; current in rental payments, charges and fees owed.
